I recently returned from JHBC’s two-week geology field trip to the southwest. As a staff member, I am blessed with many opportunities to soak in (for the fourth time) the fascinating teaching on flood geology while also having more time to enjoy photographing dramatic landscapes.
You can probably tell from my photographs that landscape photography is my favorite, especially when there’s a good long hike to get the shots. There’s a certain sense of joy and passion for me when I take photos from lesser-known or hard-to-get-to locations. I try to think outside the “frame” of all-too-famous angles.
Thank you, Josh Stafford, for putting me through so much pain of hiking with you! It pays off for such photographic opportunities.
Here are some of my initial favorites from the trip:
Double Arch at Arches National Park. This was extremely difficult to get a shot without myriads of people in the photo. Suffice it to say I did a bit of climbing to get this unique-angle shot. 🙂 |
Green River Overlook in Canyonlands National Park. Tough to really capture this place – it’s so much grander in person. |
Another shot of Green River Overlook, less distractions. |
View from Angel’s Landing in Zion National Park. Possibly my favorite hike/view combo on this trip, it requires a lot of fun scrambling over sandstone with over 1,000 ft drops on either side of you. Don’t worry mom, they have chains at those spots for safety. (Even though I may not have used them 🙂 |
The above photo with color – not sure which I like better. What think you? |
Stunningly gorgeous flowers blossoming on a cactus plant. |
Multi-shot high-res panorama of cactus flowers. This could be blown up to a really nice big print if any of you are interested. 🙂 |
Stay tuned, more photos might come soon!
